WebThing #10-Technology Blogging

I would like to talk a little about e-books and e-book devices. This is going to have a huge impact on libraries and how we conduct business. My mother just turned 68 last week, and she got a Kindle for her birthday. This is a service that is going to have appeal for many users. We in the library field need to get ahead of this trend- and make sure we have our marketing campaign in place.

I also commented on Lara's blog about authors she likes! We both enjoy Christopher Moore!

I had my first customer question the other day about whether the library had anything to download to a Kindle. I knew this question was coming sooner or later.

Two of the big appeals of the Kindle is the ability to read newspapers on it via wireless and to carry a library of books in a slim, portable, light-weight and easy to carry format. If you have ever run through the Atlanta Hartsfield Airport to catch a connecting flight, like I have, you will know this is a big bonus.

P.S. The answer to the downlaoding question is no, or at least not right now. The Kindle is proprietary softwar and hardware from Amazon. Amazon also notes that it is not guaranteed to work with all pdf's due to various technology and formatting issues.

Still, it was nice to think that this new technology inspired someone to come to the bricks and mortar library to look for info. Perhaps it is something that Amazon didn't expect either?
